Shaft height and calf fit
Before you choose, measure your calf at the widest point and compare it with the shaft circumference listed on the product page. A knee-high boot should sit two fingers below the kneecap. Ankle boots should end just above the ankle bone, which keeps the leg line unbroken under cropped trousers. Elasticated gussets and back zips give the most adjustment.
Soles and seasons
A leather sole is the dressiest and suits dry autumn days. A rubber or lug sole is the practical choice for rain and cold pavements and does not add much weight. Shearling-lined boots are worth it if your winters are genuinely cold.
