Leather sole or lug sole
A slim leather-soled loafer is the classic and the better choice with tailoring and dresses. A chunky lug-sole loafer is heavier, grips in wet weather and sits well with wide trousers and cropped jeans. Suede loafers in tobacco or navy look softest; smooth black calf is the most formal. Horsebit and chain trims add polish; a plain penny slot keeps it understated.
Fit and the first week
A loafer has no laces to tighten, so it should feel snug across the top of the foot on day one. Leather stretches about half a size with wear. If your heel lifts at the first try, go down a size rather than relying on insoles. Thin socks are the easiest way to wear them in.
